1889

The country that avoids war and the country that fights but has a hard time winning have been combined. The Swiss made some excellent firearms and the French made some unique and occasionally inspiring ones. We have added the Belgian and Dutch since they are neighbors.

I picked up this Schmidt Rubin 1889 a while ago and just got round to photographing it today.

Nothing special about, it's in reasonable condition with a good bore. The cocking ring is cracked and the bolt knob damaged which I believe are common faults on these rifles.

The 1889 was officialy introduced in June 1889 and production ran until 1897 and going by the by the serial number mine was manufactured in 1894.

I think the butt markings reveal the Canton where it was used but I need to do abit more reading on the Swiss Rifle forum just yet.

When I first got the rifle it had a "brass insert" or seperated case in the chamber. After taking advice from parashooter and others on the Swiss Rifle forum I removed it with a cerrosafe chamber cast.

The thread is here for anyone interested...

Great find Joe. Do you plan on shooting it?

Possibly in the new year Karl. I need to do another chamber cast and barrel slug as I have misplaced all the dimensions I wrote down from the earlier cast.
