A pair of .303s....

Post by PeterN2 » Tue Jun 21, 2005 5:56 pm

...from opposite sides of the world. A 7.7x56R British made No.4 and an Arisaka Type 99 7.7x58 to use the metric designations. The No.4 was made in 1941 and the Arisaka in 1940 as a best guess. The Japanese didn't date their rifles but this is in the first 200,000 produced and production started late 1939/early 1940. A similar solution for the arming of soldiers with a robust rifle for the soldier to carry to war. They both did their job and I am fortunate that they have survived the intervening 65 years to be together in my possession. They are both well travelled. The No4 was brought back from Australia and the T99 has found it's way to England via the USA as it was imported from there by the dealer I bought it from.

I have just got back home from the pub and am not in a fit state to post pictures at the moment. I will post a pic of the cartridges tomorrow. The Sam Smiths was very nice tonight.

Regards

Peter.

Here is a pic of a .303 and one of my 7.7 reloads. The 7.7 is slightly longer and fatter than the .303 and rimless of course.

Regards

Peter

Not sure why the picture has come out with all the extra stuff round it.

The .303 and 7.7x58 have almost identical ballistics. If anything, the .303 is slightly more potent but only by about 40 fps with a similar 174/175 grain bullet. There is really nothing to chose between them. I like them both.

Peter.
