My newest "longhunter" style knife.

Post by aprayinbear » Fri Feb 05, 2010 5:49 pm

Thought you folks might enjoy a pic of my newest longhunter style knife, fresh from the forge. I hammer these out as a hobby and sell them so I can make more. There's something about firing up the forge and bangin' on steel for a few hours in the morning...... really relaxing. And I always feel like I'm reliving a little bit of history. Most of my knives reflect blades circa 1740-1800. I "age" them (leaving some forge marks, etc.) to make them look authentic and I do most of the work the old way; by hand.

I forged this piece from 1095 steel and made the handle from whitetail antler with a poured pewter bolster. I usually wrap the grips with rawhide for comfort and extra durability.

Funny thing is.... even though these are purely 18th century, I still think it looks good sittin' next to my 91/30!

That's really something; the late John Kell, who was a mate for 40 years, had a nice collection of early Colonial knives and a fair few were hand made, he'd have loved that one.

Knifemaking? that's something I've always wanted to do and now I'm actually getting the chance to get into.
That's a nice one,of the old style and a black powder reenactor would love it.
