Scanning 35mm slides
I have quite alot of 35mm slides taken from the 1960s to the 2000s. I would like to scan some of them to the computer, but I have no idea of what is the most cost effective way of doing this. There are various machines on ebay from £30 to £250 plus. I presume the cheapest are not so good and the most expensive the best. Does anyone have any experience of doing this, what machine did you use and what results did you get quality wise? I have been prompted into this by going through about 350 slides my brother took in Berlin in 1961 and 1962. There are some photos of the Berlin wall being built and before and after shots of scenes before the wall was built and after. He had friends in East Berlin and used to go behind the wall to visit them. Some of the slides have faded a bit but most are as good as the day they were taken.
Regards
Peter.

Re: Scanning 35mm slides
I invested about $40 in a cheap one to see what it would do. Results mixed. The one I got seemed ok until I loaned it to my son. Thing wouldn't connect to his computer. When I got it back it wouldn't work in mine anymore either. The software was crap to say the least and no fix from the company that produced it. Chunked it out. But....better ones probably work ok. Guess it is all a case of you get what you pay for.

Re: Scanning 35mm slides
Luckily I only had a handful of slides I wanted printed up last month.
So I took them to Wally-world and paid about 55 cents each for 4"X6" prints. But if I had 350 slides,
I would buy a decent machine, and do your friends slides for a small fee.

Epson Perfection V500 Photo Scanner (6400dpi, 3.4 Opt Density, USB 2.0)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Epson-Perfectio ... B000VYYSEE
This looks as though it is just what you need Peter
Alternatively, I have an Epson 1240 Flatbed Scanner with a Film/Slide scanning hood that I can't use with Windows 7 as there are no drivers but it gave me great results with XP. Everything is there and I could let you have it for half the V500 price!

Re: Scanning 35mm slides
Thanks for the info. I will ask at the local photo shops to see what they offer as well.

This is one of the reasons that I have a desktop with XP, laptop with Vista, another laptop with Windows 7.
And keep them up-to-date on drivers and Windows, all hooked up to a home network.
I can always find a computer that programs will run on.
The wife's laptop is always in top shape so she doesn't touch ANY of my 3.
