Well....lets see what comes to mind.

The K98 has an egg knob on the bent bolt handle and the stock is cut out as an accommodation. The M48 has the back of the bulbous knob cut off flat and the stock under it has no indentation. The K98 is slightly longer overall. The K98 top stock is abbreviated while the M48 is full. My K98 in the photo has a solid stock whereas the M48 has a laminated stock. Later model K98's have laminated stocks too. Both shoot the same 8mm ammo and both have identical mechanics in so far as design and operation go. And .. my M48 has the butt cup rather than the often seen on K98's butt plate.

My particular M48 was bought as advertised as "mint" condition. I think it must have been in storage as probably reconditioned some place. It has, and several from the same batch have, a tendency to produce hard bolt opening after firing. And.. I remember checking the headspace and it is a bit tight. This may or may not be the cause of the extraction difficulty. Maybe it just needs some extra chamber cleaning. I couldn't say for sure.

If you want to know which to buy. I can't tell you. My thoughts would be:

Check for condition and serial numbers and how many of them match.

If they were both the same price and condition and you couldn't shoot them, get the K98

Give the K98 extra points in deciding the value.

The K98 is top in all the photos other than the muzzle photo in which the K98 is the one without the sight guard.

I paid $140 for mine back in 2001. I'd say $200 would be more than fair in today's market....although I don't know were the teak wood would come from.

The Yugo M24, M24/47, and M48 use the same hand guard. Unfortunately, I don't know of any place with them in stock. Keep an eye on eBay and Gun broker.

The hand guard from a K98 will not fit. As you can see, the hand guards are quite different. The Yugo Mausers' hand guard wraps all the way around the rear sight, up to the receiver, and is clipped directly to the barrel. A K98's hand guard just extends from the front of the rear sight, and is held in place with a retainer on the front of the rear sight along with the rear barrel band.
