Improvisation, a forward rest

Probably the most popular caliber firearm in most of the world. Many of us have more than one. They also are very collectible and still cheap to shoot.

Saw this at the range yesterday, have seen others made on disc brake hubs but this one took my fancy.
Not likely to wobble!!

Hey that's a cool idea, I wonder what it took to drill and tap through that hardened,
crystallized steel for the leveling bolts...............

OK, I know they aren't really leveling bolts, just a 3-point system to keep the flat bottom
from rocking on an uneven surface.......

No problem softening a hub, Vern, just light a big wood fire, throw it in and when it gets red hot or better either rake it out or let the fire burn out; the important thing is to let it cool naturally.

Here's a couple of pics of my own rest, made from scrap plywood glued together mainly.

The spiral pattern in the column was a design inspiration, (or it may have been that the scrap wood slipped after I clamped it. )

It's been very successful as I don't shoot with a rear rest, I'm much more a field shooter, who uses a rest if he can get one, rather than a bench rester.
