1942 Izhevsk Re-Sniper
This rifle was made at Izhevsk Arsenal in 1942, all the numbers are matching and all the parts bear an Izhevsk stamp. I doubt they're really all-original, the nicer rebuilds sport scrubbed and restamped serials.
This rifle had two threaded plugs in the side of the receiver when I bought it so I handed it off to a gunsmith friend to remove them with his drill press and mount a scope mount base for me.
I've had this rifle for a few years now, I just recently restocked it. I wasn't very pleased with the job I did inletting for the scope I just never got around to this project until recently.

The inletted portion of the stock. Again I feel I could have done a little better, but it is far nicer than my last attempt... there was a nasty gap with the last one because I cut too much on the first cut.

A shot of the mounting screws inside the action.

The stock this rifle came with was a postwar replacement. It had the pressed in brass sling slot escutcheons and no arsenal marks.
The replacement stock is an early/mid war which coincides with the production date of the rifle. It has a bare sling slot at the rear and a brass slot liner at the front. There is an Izhevsk stamp on the right side above the rear sling slot.
The buttplate has a lined-out serial with the correct one stamped above it, certainly because the stock was not original. I swapped it to the new stock to keep the serials matching.

A couple comparisons with my SVT-40. I put the unblued bolt carrier back in the SVT as that is the issue-correct appearance. Personally I still like the appearance with the blued bolt carrier.

I want to refinish this stock but clear shellac doesn't quite match the original color. Does anyone know if amber is a dark enough color or if I'll need to try the garnet shellac flakes I've heard some folks mention?

Good post Drake
Yours started out as one picked to be a sniper for sure with plugs that had to be removed. You did a good job restocking it too.
I got one of the mass market import sniper refurbs of unknown origin that is a "real" 1943 Nagant 91/30 with a bent bolt handle but can't vouch for anything beyond that.
One thing my construct exhibits is that the strap connecting the lense caps is put though the hole in the scope mount and sewn to the leather caps. The strap would have had to have been sewn on to at least one of the caps after passing through the hole. Don't know if this is the "right" way or not, but it would prevent loss and would make sense to do it this way.

I think you did a great job Drake.
Especially the inletted portion of the stock.
That's a fantastic looking rifle you got there.
I bought one myself some time ago.
Original sniper rifle but repro mount and glass.
BTW....great pictures.
Love the accouterments too.

Here is a video I made loading, firing, and executing a melon with the M91/30.
