Finally got my STG dialed in

Post by Brass Rat » Sun Jul 09, 2006 8:38 pm

After filing, drilling, and having to use an easy out and then chasing the threads in the gas block and replacing what was left of the sight post I finally have a functioning front sight on my FAL.

I spent a really nice morning at the range today dialing it in and finished up by putting 2 10 round rapid fire strings into an SR-1 target center at 100 yards, prone using the bipod. I used 10 rounds of Argentine surplus which are what I zeroed with and 10 rounds of my handloads. The upper group is the handloads.

This is the MP1 range at River Bend. To the far left is 25 yards then 50 and 100 as you move to the right and then 200 down the center and more 100 and 50 to the right.

It is a Century STG built on an Imbel receiver. I traded an M1 for it at a gun show last year then sent it to Randy Kline to have the flash supressor put on and had him check the headspace and barrel timing for me.

When I finally got around to trying to seriously sight it in I found that it was hitting about 18" high at 100 yards so I tried to raise the front sight post but it wouldn't budge. I tried everything that was suggested with no luck. Finally the disk came off in 3 pieces and I ended up filing the post off then drilling down through what was left and used an easy out and 8" cresent wrench on it.

I got a new #4 post, spring and plate from GunPartsGuy but even after chasing the threads it would not go in far enough. I ended up chucking it in a drill and sanding about .010" off the diameter of the disk and it worked.

I am going to order a .052" rear sight for it and then have a go at 600 yards.

I also put a Tapco SAW pistol grip on it. I just couldn't get used to the angle of the original.

STG's will really shoot.

Mine is an under 2" rifle at 100 yds with good ammo (Port & Aussie are usually 1.5 or so and SA is 2-2.5).

They're pretty much the most accurate FAL variant out there.

I will have an opportunity to see what it will do at 600 yards a week from tomorrow.

I am working on some handloads this evening. I am probably go with Hornady 168gn HPBT's over 41gn of AA-2520, I am trying to keep the preasure within 7.62x51 Nato specs.
