Cast bullets

Post by baugh55grfmj » Tue Feb 01, 2011 5:10 pm

Was just wondering if anyone has any experience with casting for this caliber. I'm trying to reach about 2000 fps. I have heard of people using IMR 3031 and H4350. I also have 748, Varget, and AA2400. Any idea of charge weight for any of these powders for 185 gr cast boolit.

I've used 185gr Lee and a roughly 200gr modified 314299 with 2400. I like using 2400 in these loads, but I don't believe you will reach 2000fps with good accuracy using it. If I was to pick a powder to try for 2000 fps, I probably would try 4895, which tollerates reduced loads well.

The classic article on Lead bullet loads in such cartridges is this one:

My personal experience is that I had to use slightly more 2400 than C.E. Harris suggests to get best accuracy at 200 yards.

With powders as slow as 4350, don't used reduced loads. There is something called Secondary Explosion Effect, or "S.E.E.", which may give you pressure excursions.
