THE FIRST WORLD WAR as reported in the daily news

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR THREAD.
Wilson answers the Pope's peace proposal with revealingly blunt point of view that no peace will come with the current German government as the US and it's allies hold them in complete contempt. He suggests, through the statement made by his Secretary of State, that the "German People" should rise up and form some kind of alternate government if there is to be any kind of negotiated peace. And....eventually....after the war....they did....and got busy on the next war.

And as Barney fife would later say to prisoners of the Mayberry jail. "Here at the rock, the first rule is to obey all Rules!"
It must have been a bit of a culture shock when black solders from the North suddenly found themselves in Alabama for training to fight for liberty and justice for all. Of course, back home in Columbus or Chillicothe it probably wasn't all that hail fellow well met either down at the YMCA or on the main floor of the local theater.

It's a good thing they noticed this little problem before going into the trenches.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR THREAD.
America really liked rich people back in those days and reported on anything they did including who they divorced or who they married or who they visited or who visited them. It was almost like having real royalty .....which we lacked.... which old Europe didn't lack but probably wished they did....but unfortunately , at the same time, causing some people with money here to feel second class for lack of engraved in stone status. But the large city newspapers sympathized and offered soul balm. So when the rich wife of a railroad baron charges people to see one of their estates and gives $500 from the proceeds from admissions to the tobacco fund it was news worthy...and maybe commendable by the standards of the time. A meager $500? Seems ridiculous even for a hundred years ago to make anything of it. At least the Washington Post seemed to think it was important because of the money royaltiy.

Re: THE FIRST WORLD WAR THREAD.
You would be surprised what it was worth......
$500.00 in 1917 had the same buying power as $10,406.55 in 2017
Anyway, she didn't actually give it did she, the visitors to Georgian Court did

Why do I hear the President's own Marine band, directed by John Philip Sousa himself, playing "Onward Christian Soldiers" as I read these stories?
