Inflation is real in the US. Not as real as the newspaper makes it...but real enough.
U.S. Inflation Rate, 1914-1917 ($100)
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the dollar experienced an average inflation rate of 8.58% per year. Prices in 1917 are 28.0% higher than prices in 1914.

In other words, $100 in the year 1914 is equivalent to $128.00 in 1917, a difference of $28.00 over 3 years.

The inflation rate in 1917 was 17.43%.

If those German troops would only learn from what the Russian troops could tell them after Russia heads for the war exit.

After reading what the Russians were saying, not very many of them came true........
Their utopia never quite happened.

There has been a story like this in newspapers for every Christmas in every war the US has ever been in down to today. Turkey... a great traditional festive staple is being served to the boys over seas as though it were a treat entered into at great expense to show how appreciative Uncle Sam is of his soldier boys.

If it were a plot in a movie nobody would believe it. But...whatever... the G men are on the case. They are prepared to believe anything.

Back in the US the trains were divided upon color lines.... and no "darkies" in first class, even if they were officers.
