The inflation rate in 1917 was 17.43%.

Inflation is real in the US. Not as real as the newspaper makes it...but real enough.

There has been a story like this in newspapers for every Christmas in every war the US has ever been in down to today. Turkey... a great traditional festive staple is being served to the boys over seas as though it were a treat entered into at great expense to show how appreciative Uncle Sam is of his soldier boys.
