Explain this news to me and how it made any sense for captured prisoners of war to go back to war against their own side. Or more unbelievably, how did Italian troops capture 18,000 of them in the first place?

Newspaper advertisements all played up the patriotic angle and how their product supported the war effort.
Sometimes.... they didn't know the different between a rifle bullet and the heavy stuff that ships fired.....but... who would notice? A rifle bullet and a heavy projectile were all pretty much the same thing, right?

Americans of German extraction living in Germany as civilians ran the chance of having their property confiscated. One such was a big enough fish to make the newspapers. George Ehret was a big time brewer in New York who returned to the homeland for an extended stay as an old man before the war and was living there when war broke out. That put his property up for grabs, even though he was a US citizen by a new and probably unconstitutional law. And he did have some property... millions of dollars worth.

However, it must have all worked out in the end because he didn't die until years after the war and died in the US reportedly worth 40 million. But... people with money could also buy lawyers in those days. Wonder how someone in a like situation with a lot less assets would have fared?

Here is a link to what his brewery was like.

At least it was worth a try. But the Supreme Court thought he didn't have a case. Draftees have to go where they are sent same as enlisted men.

It doesn't pay to be an old general that doesn't measure up as a possible war leader when there is a war on. WWI was no exception. Parade ground generals and training school executives are no problem in peace time.....but somebody at the top of the picking order is reordering the command structure like handicapping horses when it seems to really matter. A shooting war is serious business.

But.... you just can't shoot your unloved general officers or even just tell them to take off the uniform and turn over the key to the office. You have to do it a different way. The old coot gets to at least save face when being removed....kinda.

Latest air war score between British and Germans..... British version. You'd think the score would be classified information, wouldn't you? Of course if your side has the winning numbers ...maybe not.
