A hundred years ago today the Germans continued their offensive and the allies continued to hold the line. The only problem is that the line doesn't ever seem to move much. The great German break out to Paris doesn't happen...in this war part one.

On the same page of a New York newspaper we get a story about American Irish troops and a photo about "colored" troops. The one about training Irish Americans in Ireland had to have been bogus on the face of it but showed the sub set that Irish background Americans were assumed to be in. But America at the time saw itself as white and Protestant and fantasized that all their preceding ancestors came over on the Mayflower. Anyone who couldn't put up that front was suspect of being some lesser species of American. Of course the general run of Americans had to have known the truth beneath the fantasy if they could bring themselves to think at all about their attitudes. And it went without saying that any Americans with German roots were now suspect of being the enemy...that they all had faith in, including the "colored" and the "Irish".

Uncle Sam plans to take good care of the soldiers returning with war caused physical problems. What else could a soldier want?
Well about the time of the Depression the veterans wanted to be compensated for the wages they would have made while being paid soldiers pay. And Congress said ok......in 1945. So they marched on Washington and and set up in Hoover villes and made demands for money now. Didn't do them much good. However, when this cartoon was made that wasn't a problem that anybody could foresee. http://www.upworthy.com/wwi-vets-got-th ... eir-answer

William Jennings Bryan, the famous former Secretary of State and later champion the Bible and Adam and Eve at the Scopes Trial, takes a swing at demon booze. In a story along side this one the Army and Navy were having trouble getting meat fit to eat. Bryan apparently didn't have a problem with demon ham....or at least hadn't stepped forward with his biblical opinion yet.

Even when relatively small amounts of realestate are exchanged back and forth the weekly casualty rates are appallingly high. Here is what just the British admit to for one week.
