The Lewis gun. A video from youtube.

Newspaper story:

Back during WWI there was a lot of finger pointing over the incompetence of the war department in getting the troops armed with machine guns as well as rifles. The inventor of the Lewis gun jacked them up in a Congressional investigation a hundred years ago.

One of the great points in favour of the Australian OWEN Gun was that the Army Brass didn't want it.
Over their howls and protests, it was finally adopted and the rest is history; but if it hadn't been for the timely issue of Thompsons the New Guinea campaign would have been even harder.
