Sharpened bayonets....

Things a soldier would carry other than firearms, ammo, or uniforms. Meaning equipment such as ammo pouches, bayonets, holsters, oil cans, cleaning equipment, etc.

Sharpened bayonets....

Post by mozark » Wed Mar 08, 2006 12:15 pm

I am not a bayonet collector (boy there's a ball of wax,) but I do have a few. Some I bought because they matched a rifle well, and some were included along with a rifle purchase. Well, I understand that, genearally, modern bayonets were not sharpened in service. I do have, however two, which seem to have been sharpened by the armorer or soldier. Both of these came with rifles direct from the importer, and it seems unlikely that either passed through other hands between long term storage and me. One is an India Pattern Mk.1, RFI 8/41, with a 1963 Ishapore refurb date. I'm pretty sure this is an old sharpening, by the patina on the edge. The other is a Czech CZ-22 bayonet, I think. Looks like a VZ-24 bayonet, but both blade and scabbard have an E-lion-23 date. This one came with a turk contract 98-22, and has a turk number on the pommel, but is otherwise unaltered.

Just curious.

Thanks, MM

We were warned never to sharpen ours as the action of putting it in and out of the scabbard (SLR) would keep enough edge on the blade. The Armourers were supposed to sharpen before war deployment and there are tales of officers swords being sharpened before going to france in 1914. The bayonet thing may have been an Army Myth!

Hey Tim mate,

I've been meaning to ask are you the same gentleman that did well in the HBSA miniature shoot last year?

If so any chance of some pictures of your rifles for the miniature forum?

Got a BSA Century this week it shoots very well, 40 quid, I ask you!

If that was on the trainers I was indeed the one giving battlefield volume fire control orders, I never did get Brecon out of my system. I will take some opictures when I am home this weekend. I am going to miss this months HBSA lecture by Dave on the mimiature tgt trainers as I have been away and should spend time with my family. I am not a minister caught with his fingers in the till!

here are my .22rf Historic rifles, I have other .22s but I keep those for sport rather than competitions. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v140/ ... 5042b6.jpg[/pic]

A sight that came my way, I believe it to be an early model as the ones on general issue when I was in had a much more robust range adjusting lever.
