M1 Garand

Post by PeterN2 » Sun Nov 03, 2019 11:34 am

A chap was shooting this Garand next to me at Bisley. Unfortunately, it has been castrated and has been built with no gas system so the bolt has to be racked after every shot, so a straight pull rifle. It is as near as we are allowed to get to the real thing.

So I guess you can use the same eight round clip? Or has it been converted to a single shot rifle? Does the clip go flying out of the receiver after firing the last round? I'd imagine not since the bolt would still be locked.

It operates the same as the semi auto version, you just have to work the bolt each time to load another round. I presume the clip pops out when the bolt is worked after the last round has been fired. I never noticed as I was concentrating on my own attempt to hit the target somewhere near the middle.

I am considering buying one after I buy an L1A1 FAL. Work in progress!

Castrated L1A1s were for sale at the Bisley arms fair. £3000 each if you want one. I want a proper one but not allowed in the UK where they were made.

In the US....until the Democrats take over at least... you can still own a non castrated M1 rifle and carbine and SKS and some other things that are still as they were created to be.

With a 'B' licence I am allowed the full working model Peter. I am waiting for one to arrive at my local gunshop. Prices here for the full working model are around £1100 and an M1 Garand at about £1400.

Thinking about what the breech looks like and the clip flying out. Looks from Peter's photo that from that side shot that the carriage is still in place. Took a couple of shots of mine just now.
