Post by Miller Tyme » Wed Apr 13, 2022 2:06 pm

This week completes 30yrs at my present job, a milestone I never figured to make it to.(hell 20yrs was tough enough)

So I decided to treat myself to something special, and Lynn agreed too.

It will be here early next week.

You do have some really great toys....and a really understanding and supportive wife.

Looked this up online:
Accuracy: According to MIL-R-71126(AR), 3.15.7 Targeting and Accuracy, The rifle shall achieve the dispersion set forth below when fired from a Government approved machine rest. The average mean radius shall be less than or equal to the values stated below. The minimum rate of fire for conducting this test shall be three rounds per minute.[3]

Range / Average Mean Radius (AMR) — Mean Radius (MR) expresses the average distance of all the shots from the center of the shot group. AMR averages the MR of several shot groups.

200 yards (183 m): 1.3 inches
273 yards (250 m): 1.4 inches
300 yards (274 m): 1.9 inches
The radial distance from the calculated center of impact of the first target compared to the calculated center of impacts of the subsequent targets shall be less or equal to 1.086 MOA (3.3 inches @ 300 yards, 2.2 inches @ 200 yards, 2.4 inches @ 200 meters) on an average basis.

The actual rifle requirements for accuracy were .35 MOA from a machine rest and according to Major John Mende (ret.) this accuracy had to be maintained to 10,000 rounds.

Well it is finally here and it appears this particular rig was last issued to C-Troop, 6/8th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division and still has dust and dirt on its bipod from its last deployment.

A Google search brought up this:

The 6th Squadron, the newest element of the 8th Cavalry Regiment, was constituted on 28 May 2004 at Fort Stewart, Georgia as an Armored Ground Reconnaissance Squadron of the new 4th Brigade Combat Team (Vanguard) of the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized). This activation was part of the transformation of the 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) to the US Army's new modular force structure. Modular divisions activated a fourth brigade, and Cavalry Squadrons became integral organic elements of the modular Brigade Combat Teams. The new cavalry unit drew a core of personnel from E/9th Cavalry, which had been inactivated and reflagged as an element of the 6-8th Cavalry. E/9th Cavalry had been the 2nd Brigade's organic Cavalry Troop under the previous force structure.

The 6th Squadron stood-up in less than 9 months and deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom III in January 2005. Once in Iraq, the Squadron conducted a relief in place with one of its sister units, the 1st Squadron, 8th Cavalry Regiment, and assumed the mission of conducting counter insurgency operations in the urban and rural areas south of Baghdad. When insurgent activity in the Squadron's sector was defeated, the Squadron was tasked to stand-up and begin training the newly formed 5th Iraqi Army Brigade. Once the Iraqi Brigade and its 4 battalions were trained and handed over to other US battalions for employment in and around the Green Zone, the Squadron assumed the mission to provide security to the Airport Road area, known then as the most dangerous stretch of road in Baghdad. In just a short time, the Squadron, along with supporting Iraqi Security Forces, eliminated nearly all Anti-Iraqi Forces (AIF) activity along the route, and as a result of conducting persistent ISR and precision operations in the adjacent neighborhoods, AIF activity throughout the sector was significantly reduced. In January 2006, the Squadron conducted a relief in place, and it redeployed back to Fort Stewart to begin preparation for future operations.

In 2007 the 4th Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) was alerted for deployment to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in late 2007. The 4th Brigade, including the 6-8th Cavalry, continued to serve in that country into 2008.

Well since my initial posting I have been conversing with Lt. Col. Robert Reynolds, Commander, 6th Sqdn/8th Cav. Regt. and he has conveyed to me the following info;

Walter Just wanted to give you a little background before unplug for a Bible study I am leading.

1. C Troop, 6-8 Cav was a light reconnaissance Troop assigned to 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division (not 1st Cav).

2. 2009 was the first time 6-8 was authorized snipers since we reorganized from a mechanized squadron to a “light” Squadron.

3. They were in Iraq 2010-2011 and Afghanistan on their next deployment.

4. If you know when it went back into rebuild we might be able to figure out where it was.

5. Either way I will dig through my stuff and see if I can find any pictures of C Troop in Iraq…might have a picture of some of our sniper teams or maybe get you in touch with some of the guys who were there. God bless

Pastor Bob Reynolds

COL(Retired), US Army

I informed him that the rifle in questions barreled action has a date code of 2012, and was shipped out to the original purchaser 1/2013. There for the rifle was probably returned to Remington in late 2011 or early 2012 for rebuild.

His replay was;

Well if it was one of our post deployment refit turn ins. That would have been with Chaos Troop along the Iraq/Syria border In the vicinity of a town called Sinjar. If I can find anything from my old files or photos you are welcome to it. No promises since I got rid of a lot of stuff after I retired, but I can still check.

God bless Bob

So I have updated the OP to reflect corrected information and am eagerly awaiting any future updates.

Another thought... a piece of tape with a notation in marker could be a total misleading bit of information that may or may not apply to only the case.
