He is the companion rifle to the carbine that I have. Both are experimental and are in 7.7x58 and so marked on top of the chamber. The magazine box has been lenghtened and a new follower like the T38 one but longer has been installed. Rifle is in excellent condition and bore is very bright. riceone.

Very nice. You seem to find some rare Arisakas. I presume this is a prototype for the Type 99? I had my series 2 Type 99 at the range on sunday.

Regards
Peter.

I don't know if you could call it a prototype but they were intent on having a rifle that would fire the 7.7x58 round. The Japanese had machine guns in that caliber and also in 303 British. They wanted a cartridge that would penetrate breast works and the 6.5 would not do it. There were two or more other rifles offered for test but the decision was for a simplified rifle along the same action of the T38. Hence the stampings on the 99 and the lighter woods for the stock and the whole rifle being lighter and shorter.

Peter I have three original T2's and an experimental T2 with folding bayonetand and one sporterized T2 and have never fired any one of them. I guess I should. roy
