Sunday Skype chat may be good for virus boredom

Post by Niner » Sun Mar 29, 2020 1:16 pm

We have Sunday Skype chats. One should start in about an hour after I write this. Anybody got the cabin fever from the pandemic might find it amusing. Let me or Duncan know you are interested and we can hook you up.

Hi everyone.
After last nights problems I have been looking at alternatives to Skype. I found this, which is free and have installed it. The source is Cisco Webex https://www.webex.com/
I sent everyone a message on Skype just now with all the details.

See you soon – I hope!!

There are a few hitches:
Webex Meetings Free can be used by up to three people, and it also includes a 30-day free trial of the Plus plan. With the free plan, you get one host license, Voice-over-IP (VoIP) audio connection (no dial-in numbers), desktop and document sharing, a whiteboard feature, standard-quality video, and 250 megabytes (MB) of cloud storage. Signing up for the trial ups you to 25 attendees, HD video, and adds dial-in numbers.

Helpfully, every time you log in, a message at the top of your dashboard tells you when your free trial ends. However, since you don't have to supply a credit card, you don't have to worry about being automatically charged.

blackisler and I checked out the system tonight and were VERY impressed with the quality and the facilities.
It is much, much better than Skype, particularly the picture quality. It also allows up to 100 people to conference at once.I was able to share my live owlcam with Robert in real time plus we were both able to enter the conference from our mobile phones without any hassle.

This might be of interest.

After the trial the "free" service would connect only three people. If you have to connect by mobile phone that's another snag. If you pay for the service to allow 25 people, do all the other participants have to pay too? Looks like you can't call your members by the application without some money upgrade. And what about any mobile phone charges? Is it a long distance call to Japan?

What about continuing Skype but upgrading your videocam? A Logitech C920S seems to be the most popular better videocam. It runs $69.99 from Bestbuy.

This isn't a trial it is the FREE version...............

There is nothing wrong with my camera, it worked perfectly last night AND there is the option to connect a mobile phone into the call AND I was able to put up my Owlcam with Robert and I in small screens on the full picture.

This is why I went looking for an alternative.

I was going by a PC magazine comparative site on such group internet services. PC says the free use on this platform allows only three people after the free period. Must have changed the offering since the comparison. However, how is it that the free plan allows up to 100 people and the first step paid service is limited to 50?
