Swiss backpack
I think this is called an M1944 pack but I have seen it listed as different things.
So here we go!
The fabric is referred to as "salt and pepper" due to its appearance.
The top has a great big fabric flap but also a smaller two-piece leather one...
that opens up to reveal a channel running down the spine of the pack. The non-milspec pillow is there to add some shape to the pack for pics.
It comes right through to the bottom.
It's for your rifle and ice ax.
Got your back!

Re: Swiss backpack
Great post. Never thought about a pack with a slot to house a pick and a rifle. Guess those Swiss might have needed that pickaxe.

Re: Swiss backpack
Good one Arch. It would be interesting to compare it with other Alpine unites from France, Austria, Italy and Slovinia.....

Re: Swiss backpack
That's really cool, have never seen a backpack with a hole for your rifle....

Peace is that brief, quiet moment in history.......... when everybody stands around reloading.
Re: Swiss backpack
Swiss weren't worried about coming upon enemies all of a sudden so they could probably get away with that carry mode. Come to think of it I don't think they ever had any enemies while that rifle was an issue weapon.Niner Delta wrote: ↑Wed Jan 01, 2020 7:58 pm That's really cool, have never seen a backpack with a hole for your rifle....

Re: Swiss backpack
Thanks, guys!
Yes, I believe the last time the Swiss were invaded was by Napoleon.
I don't really have much use for this kind of alpine gear here in Florida, but it's still fun.
