Re: Armi San Paolo Remington 1858 New Army
Went to the woods to shoot yesterday, had a great time with my son and 2 of his friends.
We all took rifles and pistols, it was the usual bunch of 5.56 and 7.62 ARs and the pistols
in 9mm, .40, and .45........... I took my .44 cap & ball pistol. It is a blast to shoot and I found out
how dirty they get. Only put 30 rounds through it but I could tell the action was getting a tiny
bit stiff. Although when I cleaned it, it seems it hadn't been taken all the way down for a long
time and was really dirty on the inside, only thing I didn't do was unscrew the barrel.
Never had any problems at all, the caps didn't ever fall off and the .451 balls crimped down just right.
As usual, we blasted targets and even knocked one of the ears off my big gong, cost about $40..... ouch.
I went through about 400 rounds and they shot up all theirs too.
Have a video of me trying to "fan" the pistol like Roy Rogers... but can't seem (don't know how) to post an MP4.
Also a photo of my arm after trying to be a cowboy, not sure if powder burns or pieces of percussion caps.
But it was all fun.....

Good to see you having the BP experience. Don't know about the arm abrasions. I've had percussion caps blown into pieces upon firing before but the hammer kept the pieces from hitting me. I see the hat. The nearest one to you that has a hat remotely like it is in Temecula California.....so far as I know.
What brand of percussion caps are you using? You know they come in more than one pistol size.

Am using #11, what the Lyman book and owners manual says. But they are Remington Magnum caps because I read
that the Pyrodex pellets are harder to set off than loose powder and the magnum caps will work.
And they worked great, never a miss.......
Still have my old .zzn hat too.....

Great. Reading the book is the way to go.
That zzn was a wild hair at best. I think I may still have one of those around some place.

Glad you enjoyed yourself Vern.
When I had my 1858 I used to take a small bottle of screenwash ( windshield wash to you probably ) and a cloth. A bit on the cloth and then wipe the metal over between cylinders. I also used a short pullthrough sprinkled with the liquid and cleaned the barrel every 2 cylinders. Takes seconds but helps with reducing the crud

Question about 1858 Remington replica nipples..... The nipple threads on mine doesn't seem to
be metric 6 or SAE 1/4-28 NF.....what are other possibilities???
