Disassembly of the Remington New Army

Post by Niner » Wed Aug 05, 2020 2:31 pm

Remington had a good idea about design for disassembly. There is no wedge to hold the bar in place around which the cylinder revolves. Instead, there is a clever T shape handle on the spindle that is locked in by closing the loading rod to the locking catch on the underside of the barrel. The catch is under no pressure and would have had to be there just to hold the lever to the barrel with any other design. It's simple with no small screw that needed to be turned or lost. It was possible to carry an extra loaded cylinder and quickly exchange with empty one relatively quickly. The top strap on the frame also added in aiming and kept the frame square and strong.

As I suggested earlier - a much better designed pistol

Who made your pistol, Robert? The only black powder gun I have is one of those, made in Italy
by Armi San Paolo in 1973 and imported by Lyman. Fun to shoot.

It's Italian. Don't know which maker since it was a Dixie Gun Works labeled piece. The proof marks are Italian and the other side of the barrel says made in Italy. I've had this pistol probably somewhere on the plus side of 30 years.

I have one of those. Mine is Italian made by Pietta. I really ought to use it more. I haven’t used it for a while.

Peter.

I found the grips too small for my spade hands so I made dome larger ones from French barrel oak.

You did a post about making your grips, Duncan, years ago. I can't find it in the search. Must have been eight or nine years ago. Amazing how fast time moves the closer we get to dropping off the edge it goes.
