I had just got home from Army and before I could even apply for unemployment, a
high school pal that I raced cars with needed to hire a driver for a propane delivery
truck. He knew I could drive and heard I was back home, so he hunted me down and
hired me on the spot.

Sometimes the world beats a pathway to your door - other times they build a freeway past your garden gate.
I have been lucky, I always seem to live at a road junction............... :) :)

A hundred years ago it looked like the Kaiser wasn't going to get tried after all. I guess, if he wouldn't come to the trial it would have made a trial pretty pointless.

It is now 100 years since the body of an unknown warrior was laid to rest in Westminster Abby
Tomb_of_the_Unknown_Warrior_-_Westminster_Abbey_-_London,_England_-_9_Nov._2010.jpg
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unknown_Warrior

Beneath this stone rests the body
Of a British warrior
Unknown by name or rank
Brought from France to lie among
The most illustrious of the land
And buried here on Armistice Day
11 Nov: 1920, in the presence of
His Majesty King George V
His Ministers of State
The Chiefs of his forces
And a vast concourse of the nation

Thus are commemorated the many
Multitudes who during the Great
War of 1914 – 1918 gave the most that
Man can give life itself
For God
For King and country
For loved ones home and empire
For the sacred cause of justice and
The freedom of the world

They buried him among the kings because he
Had done good toward God and toward
His house

Remember the movie....The Fighting 69th? James Cagney and Pat O'Brien with O'Brien as Father Duffy? The real father Duffy did a good deed for one of the boys on this date a hundred years ago.

The war is over but the surplus canned beef remains. So...at Merry Christmas time Uncle Sam was pushing the Corned Beef. An advertisement with the wholesale costs and a message to consumers that they can buy from local merchants and know if they are getting a deal based on Government prices. The obvious play is for some grocery concerns or others to make the 20% discount purchase to allow for more of a margin of profit on markup.

Once upon a time back in the early 1970's during some kind of recession, or something like, the government was giving away free stockpiled cheese that the government had been buying and storing to keep the price of dairy products up. I knew a rich guy who went down and got in line for some. Said it was the best he ever tasted. I took his word for it. A hundred years the government wasn't so generous....no welfare nor any food stamps either. However they would offer a recipe for corn beef and cabbage.

Here's a story about hard times for the veterans in London during Christmas of 1920. Why would they sing a song about Peaches in Georgia? Have no idea. I found a youtube version of the song strangely enough.

As so Germany gets the fine. They have 42 years to pay. That would have been ending in 1962 if it all went as planned by the allies. Easy yearly payments of a lot of money and if they don't pay..... well....all sorts of bad things will happen. Only really bad thing that happened was that before the payment schedule got to the halfway mark there was this thing called WWII.
