Another ikon of the old South falls

Post by Niner » Mon Dec 07, 2020 11:01 am

Virginia Military Institute is an old military school that was for ages was known as the West Point of the South. Among it's honored instructors was Stonewall Jackson from 1851 until the Civil War where he became one of the most famous Confederate Generals. During the Civil War, cadets, some quite young, took an active part in at least one battle near their institution and a few of them actually died in combat. Now days it is shrinking from its former glory and traditions. First they were required to admit women. The traditional values were lashed as not race friendly and now has a black retired general top official in charge. And then, most recently, the statue of Stonewall Jackson had to be removed. So much for the long gray line of the South.

The school is still regarded as one of the better schools in the nation.

There was a movie out a few years ago called "Field of Lost Shoes", about the cadets fighting in
the Battle of New Market. Also read that they weren't just little kids. Average age was 17, youngest were
15 and oldest in their 20s. The John Wayne movie, "The Horse Soldiers" also showed the cadets in battle, but
that movie led you to believe they were children.

They keep taking down things, do they think that will change the past? People should know so history doesn't
repeat itself.

It was a college level school from the start. Like you say...it has been portrayed as a school with classes several levels lower than what was actual.

Once upon a time, History was what prejudiced recorders said it was (even back in Roman times) nowadays it's what prejudice dictates that it shall be; perhaps not quite yet, but we're getting there'
Self Defence is not only a Right, it is an Obligation.
