Saw this in a newspaper from a hundred years ago. Seems The Controller of the Treasury noted that some soldiers in the hospital with serious conditions and were on the verge of ending enlistment time in service took advantage of a reenlistment bonus gaining $90 under false pretenses. How dare they? They knew they were going to be kicked out of the service because of physical inability to serve any longer. They should expect to find another way of making a living. Take up selling pencils on street corners or something. What did they want... they got a medal for that one missing eye and that gas attack problem didn't they? What else do they expect?

Now days the military veterans in the US get a lot better treatment in general. Medical treatment and disability checks are common. But the results of seeking treatment or assistance can be inconsistent with need or even being deserved. There are a lot of veterans who have learned to game the system also as opposed to others who don't seek the treatment they deserve or who are denied. It all comes down to how the nearest VA facility is operated in the veterans area it seems from friends who have told me of their experiences. Experiences vary widely.
One friend, a combat veteran of Vietnam, walked into his local facility to see if the VA would pay for his diabetes medications since the Agent Orange pronouncement regarding the possibility of connection. By the time he walked out he not only had his medicine but a 75% or so disability check that included PTSD and God knows what else that he didn't come in asking for at all. He has since had operations and an assortment of other treatments with no connection to government service at all. On the other hand another friend, who had much more combat experience and had been awarded valor medals as well as having been wounded at least once, applied for assistance for a particular rather urgent case and had quite a struggle to get any consideration at all. And when he was approved for an operation it took months and months before he got into a VA hospital, although he was in pain while waiting.
