Military humor from a hundred years ago

Post by Niner » Fri Jul 30, 2021 10:22 pm

This is copied from the August-September 31st Regiment publication from the Philippines in 1921. I think one of these jokes shows that nobody was "woke" yet then and would be considered in bad taste now days and not published in any military unit magazine. But you have to remember that the Army was actually segregated back in 1921 so the joke seems odd and out of place now. Obviously a race joke wouldn't have drawn any surprise or comment in the day a hundred years ago.

Reminds me of a story that I’ve probably already posted, but it’s still funny.
Colonel Dowdy who was CO of 1RTB was taking an evening stroll and came upon a sentry who didn’t challenge him, I forget the details but theColonel said “I’m Dowdy”
The sentry replied “Well, howdy Dowdy”
A charge followed and the Colonel was known as”Howdy” from then on, but not in his hearing!!

The Colonel after he retired became a Catholic priest and became the first married priest in the Catholic Church in Australia.
He later officiated at his daughter’s marriage and, in due course, baptised his first grand child.
Self Defence is not only a Right, it is an Obligation.

My father once told me that ( he was in the RTR ) a notice was pinned on the camp board saying " This week is security week, all restricted documents must be locked up unless in use"

The following morning a CHAD appeared on the same notice board.........
