If the war wasn't bad enough killer, there was a new one just getting started.

The 1918 influenza pandemic (January 1918 – December 1920; colloquially known as: Spanish flu) was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic, the first of the two pandemics involving H1N1 influenza virus.[1] It infected 500 million people around the world,[2] including people on remote Pacific islands and in the Arctic, and resulted in the deaths of 50 to 100 million (three to five percent of the world's population),[3] making it one of the deadliest natural disasters in human history

The next daily news reveals a flood of new Spanish Flu victims in the US starting to show up. The most dramatic thing about the epidemic is that it is killing the young and healthy adults more than the older, and seemingly more likely to die from such an epidemic. This apparently hasn't struck home yet.

The National Security Action committee was one of the original political action groups on a national scale. They were among the first agenda focused organizations to use the money they collected in large amounts to sway elections. They started out as what we today would think of as a right wing drum beating true blue patriotic organization with a narrow point of view. They had some sway up until the end of WWI and for a few years beyond it seems. This speech in the House seems extreme....but it wasn't too much off the mark. The organization turned more and more into something like Nazis until they died a natural death in the late 1930's .

Another bond drive. Americans fork over billions of dollars...but get a return in interest. 4.25 interest is what they paid at maturity. Now days there are savings bonds sold directly by the government...but they pay a fixed interest of one percent. Not exactly a good investment. I'd take me some of those 1918 war bonds though.

But they didn't hold back any on the salesmanship in those days.

Suffrage comes up again. This time Wilson makes a speech in the Senate to promote it. The only problem is he is promoting it for the wrong reasons by light of history and makes a pretty weak argument at best for passing the amendment. However, he didn't convince enough Senators to get it passed. Women wouldn't get the vote nationally in all elections until 1922.

Germans and shotgun protest. They say it's against the rules of war agreed upon before the shooting started. However, if you actually look it up, shotguns weren't clearly ruled out. On the other hand.....considering gas attacks....wonder why they had no problem there? In any case Germany gives warning that anyone captured with a shotgun will be executed.

The Germans continue to lose ground and victories for the allies are reported daily. Only ... the Spanish Flu is kicking ass on the home front. Stores are operating on reduced hours. People are advised to take all sorts of precautions when in anything like a crowd. Even the schools have been closed in Washington DC.

The 1918 pandemic killed between 20 and 100 million (depending on who you believe) worldwide.
A lot more than the military that died in WWI, and many of them died of the flu.

Peace is that brief, quiet moment in history.......... when everybody stands around reloading.
