A hundred years ago the submarine went on a readiness cruise. Then there was an emergency dive as a training thing but.....somebody forgot to shut an important valve. The captain did the best reaction things he could and the ship ended up nose down with the stern above the surface. The they managed to cut a hole in the hull and wave a t shirt on a pole and attract some help to cut them out.

The commander must have not received praise for his cool headed actions because the rest of the 1920's he was the second in command of a submarine tender. But...his fortunes rose with WWII and ended up as commander of the 7th Fleet in the Pacific at the end of WWII.

When asked by the board of inquiry if there should be blame or commendation for the crews action the captain said.
