B-17 "All American"

Post by Niner » Sat Aug 18, 2012 12:31 pm

A friend sent me this link. A story about a B-17 crew that had a really lucky day after an event that could have ended their lives.

They are right about it being one of the most famous photos of WW II, I have seen it and the other photos many times.
It was truely amazing the amount of damage the B-17 could sustain and still fly, the B-24 was not nearly as rugged and could not sustain nearly the punishment as the B-17.

Quite an interesting read. Wonder how many almost made it back but weren't quite as fortunate in having the final failure on the runway.
The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who don't have it.

It was a tough job, being an airman in WWII.
There were over twice as many airmen killed in WWII as there were Marines.
