Separation between church and state

Post by Niner » Tue May 12, 2020 10:57 am

It's been a long held belief that the Constitution does not recognize religion as an actual component of government. On the other hand, in the US, churches receive freedom from taxation as an apparent gift reflecting "freedom of religion". However, in real life, many religious groups are up to their necks in politics. Trump himself is in favor of fundamentalists working to support issues, mostly right wing, and he brings the most sketchy of the religious leaders to the oval office to pray with him now and again. At the same time political figures on the other side are on the warpath for their personal agendas that are often in direct opposition to their theoretically brother believers on the right. This goes back to prohibition and earlier that religious "leaders" have jumped into political questions with firm convictions. However, the left leaning anti gun movement is gearing up this election year for political combat too. They are often ignored by the anti Trump news media as though their intentions were benign. But with such people like Mike Bloomberg funneling money to them they are likely to be a force to recon with.
“The faith community has seen firsthand the devastating effects of gun violence in places of worship and feels more than ever that they have an urgent moral responsibility to stop the scourge of gun violence in America — and they’re doing so by mobilizing their networks around candidates who support broadly popular gun safety measures in 2020,“ Angela Ferrell-Zabala, chief equity, outreach and partnerships officer at Everytown, said in a statement.
