Bacon Butties

Post by Niner » Sun Feb 23, 2020 5:02 pm

Not exactly. Duncan was talking about the official bacon buttie in his native land as a requirement for citizenship. It's made out of basically Canadian Bacon or a slice of pork chop and a couple slices of bread. In the US we have the egg McMuffin with egg, cheese, canadian bacon between the top and bottom of an English muffin. I mentioned I had a McMuffin maker. I got it as a gift from my daughter for a gift once. Here's a video that explains how it works.

I have one of those McMuffin makers too. Like the guy in the video says, it works
great and makes a good sandwich. The part I like is you can use better stuff when you make
your own. I usually use good cheddar cheese and a precooked sausage patty. And as he said,
kind of a pain to clean if you are lazy like me. But it's easier to just make one on the stove and
use a toaster for the muffin.

I haven't used mine in a while. I don't want one every day. So buy a $4 package of Canadian bacon and a $2 pack of English Muffins to start. Eggs and cheese are pretty regular stuff in the fridge so no loss. My wife isn't interested in one even if I make it for her. Then I make one sandwich and then the bacon and the muffins spoil from not thinking about doing it again for several weeks.....so I could go a half mile away to a McDonalds and buy one and come out cheaper.

Oh...looks like I spelled butty wrong.. sorry Duncan.

So...looks like if you use an English muffin it's a banjo and if you use some kind of loaf slice white bread it's a butty. Which brings up another wild thought..... do the English call an English muffin an "English" muffin? It would seem that would be like calling a hot dog bun an "American" hot dog bun, which would seem an unnecessary adjective.

The banjo can be made with any bread or roll, it's only a banjo when the egg yolk is "dangerous" ie soft n runny. If it spills down your shirt front you hold the sarnie away from your body and wipe the egg from your shirt, hence banjo.

Ok, Joe. If you say so. I'm prepared to believe you. Which leads me to ask why the name "butty"? From a notion that that may be where the bacon comes from brought up this in a google search: “British Back Bacon” where a single slice/rasher includes meat from the loin and the belly....not the butt.
