Local famous eating places

There was a restaurant named Baiyey's located about half way between Dauphin Island and Mobile on two lane Dauphin Island Parkway. It was doing a big business drawing people from Mobile and surrounding areas with it's hey day probably in the late 50's until the mid to late 60's. It's claim to fame was two seafood dishes that they claimed to have invented. It used to pack them in and sometimes there would be a wait to get a table. It closed a year or two ago. It became too far off the beaten path with lots more seafood restaurants to choose from in or nearer to town and, also, the people who used to rave about it got old and died....mostly.

I remember back in the bad old civil rights days it had a front dining room for all and sundry to abide the new way of things and a back dining room for what used to be called members and guests..meaning white people. The back was bigger than the front by twice but during the last days only the "front" was open.

The two famous seafood dishes they offered, that they claimed to have invented, were West Indies Salad, made with lump crab meat, and fried crab claws....blue crab as was fished from Mobile Bay. Now both dishes are served just about everywhere along the Gulf Coast.

I ate there with my wife back about ten years ago. We had taken the ferry at the mouth of Mobile Bay and were driving back home from a stay at Gulf Shores and stopped to eat. Notice the sign in the background concerning children not under control of their parents.

Skip down about half way to see this story about Bailey's in this link.
