The rifle that took the K31's place in 1957

The country that avoids war and the country that fights but has a hard time winning have been combined. The Swiss made some excellent firearms and the French made some unique and occasionally inspiring ones. We have added the Belgian and Dutch since they are neighbors.

The rifle that took the K31's place in 1957

Post by Niner » Sat Oct 02, 2021 11:23 am

I was looking to see what kind of rifle a Swiss airplane rifle sight would have been attached to and found this interesting rifle. It was called the Sig Stgw57. There apparently have only been a few thousand imported into the US, although like the K31 Swiss, soldiers could have kept their individual rifles.... after the full auto selection hardware was removed. It is surprising we didn't see as many as we saw of the K31 imported into the US....or was that a Clinton no semi auto band thing? It must have been an ease into auto familiarity rife for the Swiss soldier with the same kind of beer can straight pull.... but release....charging handle.

The rifle shot the same intermediate round that the K31 used and had a magazine of 24 rounds. It also had a pretty sophisticated for a battle rifle micrometer sight. It came in different lengths and there were experiments with different calibers including the 7.62x39. One of the things I like reading about it is that the case discharge was soft and angled downward. No hitting the guy next to you with a flung casing at sting speed.

Such a mean looking rifle

I've been after one for a long time. Sigh. I had one in my Fluffy little hands. It's no light-weight, that's for sure.

Some day some day. ;)
