This guage was used for weighing the various springs on the SMLE.

Weighing the pull-off.

(a) place roller of tester trigger over trigger and pull diagonally over small of butt. When trigger begins to move, the weight should read from 3 to 4 pounds.

(b) The pull is then continued until the rifle fires and then the weight should read between 5 to 6 pounds.

Weighing the main spring.

(a) With the striker in the fired posistion, place the tag of the tester over the cocking piece thumb grip and pull steadily. The cocking piece should move at 7 to 9 pounds.

(b) Cock the action and apply the tester as in sub-para a. The cocking piece should move at 14 to 16 pounds.

Weighing the bolt head retaining spring.

(a) Draw back the bolt until the head is over the retaining spring. Place claws of tag over the bolt head and pull vertically upwards.

(b) The bolt head should release at 10 to 16 pounds.

NOTE: If the weight is outside these limits, examine the sear screw to see if it is tight.

Weighing the extractor spring.

With the bolt head in the bolt-way or taken out of the rifle, place the tip of the tag of the tester under the hook of the extractor. When it moves the weight should read (with a No.3 spring fitted) from 7 to 9 pounds.

Weighing the butt trap spring.

Place the tip of the tag under the rib of the butt trap and pull diagonally up. The trap should move at 2 to 3 pounds.

General notes.

The rifle should be placed in a vice fitted with protective clams for the weighing of all springs so that the rear hand guard may first of all be removed without damage. The rifle must be cleaned, the magazine in posistion, and the rifle fully cocked. If any spring is overweight, look for burrs, dirt, etc. Then retest. (The tester trigger is to be used for weighing.)

Thanks for that post. I'm curious though, as I have three variations of the spring tester. one had two string loops, one either end, a centre punch tool and a flat, slightly curved tool which is perfect for getting the top wood of an SMLE. the other one is more simple, with a hook one end and a ring the other. any sugestions?

That's really something new to me

Wonder if a regular fish scale would measure the pounds of pull on the trigger as well? Thanks for posting the photos and the information , Joe.

Nick, i have not seen the spring testers you describe, perhaps Aughnanure can answer your questions as i am sure he was a military armourer.

Maybe when I get home.

I'm in an Internet 'cafe' in Mumbai at the moment and facilities are not of the best !!! but adequate and friendly, just small buisenessman making a modest living with some slow dusty and a bit outdated equipment.

Winter here at the moment so it's dusty and hot, feel right at home.

Here's a pic of the Tester on the slab-sided cocking piece.
