I am hoping to make an infill piece that will be glued to one side and will will locate on the other with a small pin guide. I decided that this would be the easier way of finishing the grips but it needs to be done last for a perfect fit.Dave 101 wrote:Hi Duncan
The project is moving on then , dont forget you will need an infill at the bottom of the grips to take up the thickness of the frame or cut out the inside of the grips so they will end up flush together .

Re: BIGGER HAND GRIPS FOR MY 1858 - THE PROCESS
I actually managed an afternoon to myself in the shed and have managed to get this far.
I think these will certainly bed down into a reasonable pair of grips - for as first attempt anyway - so it's now time for the fine sanding and fitting to start.
These have both been shaped freehand on the vertical sander with some use of the power file.
And it still fits in the box

Re: BIGGER HAND GRIPS FOR MY 1858 - THE PROCESS
Mostly finished now.
Next job is to drill the holes for the retaining screw and fit a brass piece to retain the head. That's a job for a friend of mine.
Once that is done I will size the piece that will fill below the frame and glue it to one of the grips.
The LH grip is a little larger than the right one. Main reason is that it is comfortable as it is and secondly - they are hand shaped and that's how they turned out!!
I hope to be giving them a final sanding on Monday before they are stained & oiled.

Now you are almost there. Those professional grade gun stock refinishing chemicals should have it looking first rate. Looking forard to the photos of the finished project.

The one thing that keeps coming back is what I was taught at school................Always remove the minimum material and do it slowly

Re: BIGGER HAND GRIPS FOR MY 1858 - THE PROCESS
OK, here is the finished article. I am very pleased the way it turned out. I surprised myself as I didn't think I could do it!
It feels very comfortable but I will only know on Wednesday when I take it to the range.
This is the MKI and in the future there may well be a MKII in Walnut which will match the gun better!
