.22 Hornet

Probably the most popular caliber firearm in most of the world. Many of us have more than one. They also are very collectible and still cheap to shoot.

.22 Hornet

Post by Dave 101 » Sat Dec 06, 2014 3:31 pm

A few weeks ago I bought a BRNO .22 Hornet made in 1967 , my 3rd BRNO + 1 CZ , always a bit of a gamble buying from an on line source but it was half the price of anything else I had seen in the same category and came with a set of dies so I took the plunge .
Having given it a good strip down clean and fitting a scope then zeroing it whilst it was out of the stock and the bolt was out then reassembling it only to find the bolt wont go back in because it hits the ocular lense housing , a few cuss's and find another scope that will fit and zero that by bore siting it .
I have planned to use this at the club range so I need to cast my own bullets for reloading with a download recipe to keep within the range safety limits . A couple of weeks go buy sourcing cases , borrowing a mould , prepping , casting , then making up test loads .
The first couple of trips to the range ended none to well and it dawns on me this scope doesn't like the recoil , its fine on a rimfire but now its all over the place , so back to the original scope and a new set of scope mounts .
So another couple of visit to the range testing various loads with Unique powder without a lot of success 1 1/2" groups at best , so I have a look at a couple of reloading books and I see one has a load for Viht N110 which was fortunate as I have 3/4s of a tub of that in the cabinet .
The book recommended 6.3 gns so I make up a batch from 6 to 6.8 , 6 seemed to be the best so then I make a batch from 6 down to 5 gns ,
5.4 proved to be the star of the day today , with a 1 hole 5 shot group .

The Hornet is the 3rd one down , top is the CZ Varmint , ZKM 468 and the Model 4 ( 456 ) .

Best group today

I hope this will be repeatable .
