1866 Winchester

Post by ajcarey » Wed Apr 13, 2005 11:41 am

My club has a couple of 100 and 200 yard shilouette matches each month for lever action and other BPCR rifles. I have tried shooting my 1874 Sharps target rifle, but it is too long and too heavy for me to handle easily shooting offhand. I decided that I would look for something that was a bit more comfortable for these matches.

Last weekend I found this 1866 Winchester "Yellowboy" in .45 Long Colt made by Uberti at a local store. It is a sporting model with a long 24 1/4 inch barrel. It felt mighty comfortable holding it in an offhand position and the damned thing followed me home. There went my tax refund.

Got a chance to shoot it on Sunday with a box of Winchester .45 Colt Cowboy Action ammo. The rifle shot really well and after a few sight adjustments, it was consistent hitting in the dark area of the target at 100 yards. The ammo was a bit anemic and I am sure that performance can easily be improved with some handloads.

Both the rear and front sights are dovetailed. I am toying with the idea of replacing them with a Marble's tang sight on the rear and a tunnel target sight on the front. The factory sights are fine, but I think that I could use the extra help, especially at 200 yards. The tang sight would also provide a greater degree on granularity in both elevation and windage control.
