Point me to spares please
I need the following parts. Can anyone suggest where I might find them.
A nosecap for a No 1 Mk I, the kind with straight ears.
A lens cleaning brush + plastic container that goes with L42A1 sniping rifle.

My understanding was the nosecap with the inward curving ears was a MkI feature (originally it was a complete hood but was changed due to complaints).A nosecap for a No 1 Mk I, the kind with straight ears.
The straight eared ones were introduced on the MkIII and as such pretty well any one will do. The exception would be the late war Australian production with the piling swivel boss unfinished. Ebay, any of the major suppliers in the US (Numrich, Springfield Sporters etc) or gunshows should turn one up fairly quickly.
The L42A gear would require more diligence and wide advertising. In other words I don't have a clue where you would find one.

The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who don't have it.

The Mk1 hood is different to that issued on the MkIII. It looks much more like someone just cut the top of the hood out. They are smooth sided (rather than having ovals impressed), and are quite distinctive. The short answer is to search ebay, and be really broad in your searches. Other than that, they are so specific or unusual that I haven't the foggiest where to find them

Well the cleqaning brush and container issue was solved pretty easy. Got this reply from a friend:
"You can have the second L42A1 lens cleaning brush and container that I find"
Quite nice of him, I'd say.
These bits are for a collector friend in SA. He says the nose cap protecting ears differ from that of the common No 1 Mk III in being externally straight and not curved.

The best suggestion is to talk to someone like Jim Franklin at EFD. I'm down at the NRA open day tomorrow with the HBSA, so I will try to remember to ask.
and hes right, they are straighter.

I've been a long time reader here, and thought this would be as good a time as any for a first post...
There are actually two different types of nosecaps found on the MkI and it's variations. The earlier has ears that curve inward at the top, and the later has straight ears. The MkIII type is actually outward curving from the bottom.
A good comparative photo can be found on pg.156 of Mr. Skennerton's latest.

I don't have Skennertons latest so I'll take your word for it. But as I have a MkI*** with a 1912 date and the older inward curving ears, my question would be how "late" did they bring this variation in ?
And a very warm welcome jrhead75, I hope you'll find the the place convivial.

Thanks much for the welcome, I know I'll enjoy it here.
Per Skennerton, Naval MkI**, ConD MkII** & ConD MkII*** rifles got several modifications, including the straight eared nosecaps in mid 1912.
I've got a 1907 MkI*** that was upgraded for MkVII in 1914, and it also retains the inward curving ears.
