A classic or two

Post by Woftam » Tue Oct 02, 2007 11:49 pm

While I was digging out the Belfast photo's I came across a few others I thought might be of interest.

If I was limited to one gun, I'd like to think I could have one of these...

If we're talking classics .....

continuing the aero theme for a bit

and not forgetting the US

now let's get armoured

and

and something from the French to finish

Was the bottom one from the Hotel des Invalides? I went there about 15 years ago on a freeby!
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal lobotomy!

Glad to see that they didn't remove the swastika from the FW-190. I'm not condoning anything that the Nazis stood for but it annoys me when people try to erase history becasue it's unpleasant.

Yes it was Hotel des Invalides. Just walking past and heard the noise. There were 2 horse drawn pieces and the noise was tremendous, I cannot think what whole battalions must have sounded like.

The L of A exhibition was a tribute to the man featuring, among other things, his rifle. Unfortunately time prevented me from going in. I spent the entire day there and would have gone back again but my wife wanted to actually spend some time with me - so I took her with me to the Belfast next day

Lawrence of Arabia's rifle? Something British I'd imagine?

Bog standard No1 MkIII ;) , except for the engraving. Oh and the gold plating. Not to mention the odd Arab decoration. I don't think piccies of it are all that common. Must see if I can find one.

Lawrence's SMLE

Post by Niner » Fri Oct 05, 2007 11:07 am

Hey, found this site with some information. That odd script was from the fact the rifle had been captured by the Turks at Gallipoli. Lawrence was presented the rifle and he kept it through his adventures, adding five notches for the five men he killed with it.

This is a PBS site.
