First bunch of Aussies I met (in a bar) were impossible to identify. Their language didn't sound like anything I had ever heard. Eventually it bugged me enough to ask, hoping that one of them would speak something I could understand. The answer, "Srayn, mite" eventually translated into Australian, mate. This cost me a round of beers, but it was a valuable lesson.

They
were good company. And they had Australian beer. The Australian enlisted men could not buy hard liquor without written permission from an officer. We worked a deal where I got a whole case of good Aussi beer in exchange for a lousy quart of cheap PX rum. They thought they were getting a steal of a deal. I knew I was.
The Australians also carried Browning High Powers. This was my first chance to use one. Had to find my own ammo as theirs was all controlled!
