With a UK FAC you can have section 1 which covers firearms, section 2 shotguns (issued as a seperate certificate) section 5 which covers prohibited such as machine guns (dont ask) and section 7 1 and 3 which either allow you to keep a weapon which is considered to have met the criteria for age and obselesence of ammunition to be kept at home. This covers such calibres as 9mm Steyr, .455, you get the picture. Calibres which are still available such as 9x19, .32 ACP etc mean that the pistols can still be owned but must be kept in a suitable approved facility which has the security and range facilities available but they arent supposed to be used for competitions!
Now you have some idea of the fudge that politicians can make when jumping on bandwagons.
Firearms law in the UK has always been about controlling the individual rather than the weapons!
