BSA training rifle Finally arrived--new pics

Probably the most popular caliber firearm in most of the world. Many of us have more than one. They also are very collectible and still cheap to shoot.

BSA training rifle Finally arrived--new pics

Post by Calfed » Sun Mar 14, 2010 10:03 pm

I got this BSA trainer at a recent auction and wondered if anyone knows anything about them.

This is an auction picture (I'll post better when it arrives)

Auction description advised:

Birmingham Small Arms Cal .22 SN:1873 Bolt action single shot training rifle dated 1907 and proofed as built in England. Blued finish, hard wood semi pistol grip stock, 24" barrel, good bore and action. Nice old leather sling, long range ladder type

It looks an awful lot like the top rifle in this ad

Which is located at this website http://www.rifleman.org.uk/War_Office_P ... _Rifle.htm

Nice rifle.
They are commonly known as the War Office Pattern Trainer. If you have a look in the Military training rifle Forum you will find a few posts about them.
A fun little rifle.

Yep definitely a WOP, they never really caught on as the SMRC conversions by Bonehill, Greener and the likes were more accurate and then when BSA started their own lineage of small receiver miniature rifle Martinis, the rest they say is history.

The HARC site link is a sticky at the top of this forum.

Can't say for certain if that's the same make we used in the Army Cadets or TAVR, but it's damn near a good look-a-like! I do remember that in the RM's (before we got the SLR Sub-Calibre insert) we used a bonafide .22 Trainer which was near identicle to the L.42 Sniper Rifle.

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in morning... WE WILL REMEMBER THEM!

Those are nice looking trainers.

Couple of months ago, there were a bunch of honest-to-God trainers being auctioned, including a few Enfield trainers. Wanted one in the worst way, but someone wanted them more.
