The good news is that that I shot 81 points better with my #5 than I did last year with my 03A3.

The bad news is that I missed my first national match medal by 8 points

I'll post some more later, I just got in an hour ago and I've been up since 0430.

The offhand stage did me in again.

I shot a 91 in the slow fire prone, 86 in rapid fire prone from standing, and then a 61 in the offhand slow fire including 2 misses outside of the 5 ring.

I managed to reload during the rapid fire stage without incident but I rushed the last 5 rounds and that probably cost me 5-6 points when compared to the first 5.

The score card stub that I have shows a 69 in the offhand for a total of 246-3 which is 1 short of a bronze but the online score shows 61. I don't have a copy of the individual shot score for that match so I'm not sure which is correct. I'm going to ask if they can check my scorecard and make sure of the score. It won't make any real differance in the final outcome but it will make me feel better. Last year the posted score was 9 points less than the stub showed but either way it was so low that I didn't bother to check on it.

I got quite a few comments about shooting the #5 from the other shooters. I saw several #4's but the vas majority of shooters used 03's.

Brass Rat, Aside from the technical (scoring) issue, how'd you feel about using the No.5? Good/Bad decision?

I'm very happy with the #5 and I am all but certain that it will make the trip with me next year.

I know that technically a #4 would make a better match rifle but I just don't have the confidence in any of my #4's that I have in my #5.

For me the #5 has 3 big advantages over the #4. First is the weight, especially up front, it just feels better and balances better.

Second is that you avoid all of the art, science, and voodoo involved in properly bedding a #4 or #1. Neither the stock or handguard contacts the barrel past the Knox form on my #5, even when using a 1907 sling for support.

The third has nothing to do with balance, ballistics, or barrel harmonics. I have a very nice #5 with an excellent bore that shoots as well as anything I have at 200 yards, and I just love to shoot it.

Brass Rat, Yours was the third, IIRC report of using the No.5 in competition and none had reported a tinge of regret!

PS The confidance factor is crucial. I know that if a lunch or a beer is on the line, I'll take one particular '43 Maltby. No tangeble reason, really.
