New M39 sights
After waiting for many, many months I finally received the new sights for my Mosin Nagant M39.
Had some problems removing the tiny screws from the original open rear sight, but a little heat and the correct screw driver did the trick.
The only difference between the old and new front sight is that the new one is thinner.
What an improvement.
I even don't have to wear my glasses when using these sights.
It took me only 4 shots to get her on target again and groups are getting better with each shot.
I have a club match coming up in a couple of weeks where I will try out the "new" M39.
I will post the results after the match.
Some pictures.
From left to right:
* old open rear sight
* new rear sight
* old front sight
New rear sight.
Met vriendelijke groet,
Martin

I had to go look at one of mine to see what the screws looked like. I noticed in your photo it looks like you removed the elevation slide. I'd imagine that slide would be a problem with the aperture sight....or would it?

Re: New M39 sights
Nothing wrong with your eyes Robert.
I took that picture before I put back the elevation slide.
Because I use reduced loads (18 grains of VihtaVuori N110) the rear sight was set on 500 meters on a 100 meter range.
After replacing the open sights I had to increase the distance to over 600 meters.
Removing the rear sight was no problem at all.
I had to relief the pressure of the rear sight leaf pin by using a............................................take a look at the picture Robert.
I don't know what the English word for this tool is.
After that , drifting out the pin was easy.
Rear sight with slide.
Over here this tool is called a....................lijmtang.
Met vriendelijke groet,
Martin

I'd just call it a clamp. If the bar were longer I'd call it a bar clamp.
Thanks for the follow up, Martin.

Re: New M39 sights
No problem Robert and thanks for the short English lesson.
My first impression of these new sights is FANTASTIC.
On target in 4 shots without my glasses.
Let's see how they perform during our club match.
I will keep you posted.

These aperture sights make a lot of difference to my shooting too Martin. I am reluctant to start useing scopes on my rifles just yet.

Re: New M39 sights
Very true Joe.
They do make a lot of difference.
About the scopes.
If the rifle is not issued with a scope I will not buy one for it.
I only have one rifle with a scope.
It's a Mosin Nagant M91/30 issued with a PU scope.
I love shooting this rifle, but personally I find shooting this rifle is more difficult then shooting with a rifle equipped with aperture sights.

Martin
