The American newspapers were all full of the war. Each day there was another headline. All sorts of assertions about victories and defeats. Questionable atrocity stories were inserted to good effect now and again as well. Nobody had a clue actually about the course of the war. But the Allies were already thinking about making the Germans pay the price when it was over. Prevent future wars they thought.

And they didn't have Snopes in those days to point out a largely BS story. Considering how one wave looks pretty much like the next at sea.....and there were no GPS systems....and the subject wasn't even issued a compass ..and...well ...you get the picture.

How about this for a topic of thought for an American Newspaper at a time before the US got into WWI. Brings to mind many of our Presidents over the last Century and how they were able to duck out of conflicts in their youth without hurting their political chances.

Considering how the officers were largely nobility... according to this story..... how many nobles were there back then? Maybe it was a good thing to thin out the herd? A natural selection process? And note the accepted American notion that he who has the most money is somehow at the top of a class system .

Would bombing the Eiffel Tower be considered "Terrorism"? You can bet it would be today.....Zeppelin or no Zeppelin. Back a hundred years ago they hadn't coined the word yet.

And the French shot at the Zeppelin and missed. Must not have been a big enough target for them.
