Meanwhile back at the ranch..... President Wilson is preaching that the US must hold the high moral ground and not join in the war. He doesn't want to increase the military because it would suggest other than what he is preaching. The US myth that the US is made up of citizens familiar with guns who would rise up in mass at the first need of defense strikes the Secretary of War as unrealistic in how to form a competent Army. He thinks it prudent to raise the standing Army by 25,000 enlisted men and 1000 officers ...and then encourage a strengthening of the reserves.

Little did he take into account that 25,000 was something like the casualty rate on an average attack day at the front in Europe.

Talk about a World War. How about these guys? Something about their uniforms looks not really suitable for the trenches. The pointy edges of their skirts look really warlike don't they?
