Peep sights on the 1903 A3, M1 carbine and Garand
Peep sights on the 1903 A3, M1 carbine and Garand
Just because I had some time on my hands and was thinking at least I ought to post something about milsurps every now and then I'm offering this post for your amusement. Got to thinking about the American weapons of WWII and the American version of the peep sight. So... the photos are of the three most iconic American battle weapons of WWII side by side. From the top down ...back view, top view, right side view, left side view shown in the image. The first vertical row is the Remington 1903 A3 which fires the 30.06 battle round. The second row is the M1 carbine which fired the less powerful but handy close up action 30 carbine round. The third row is the workhorse of American forces in WWII and probably most sophisticated mass issued weapon of WWII .....the 30.06 M1 Garand.

Went through basic with an M-14 and I remember the sight looking similar to the M1 Garand, with
the little rounded dog ears sticking up on each side and a knob on both sides.
But that was 53 years ago and I was a 19 year old kid, so who knows what I remember.......

I don't have an M14 now but I do have an old basic training cycle book.

The M14, since it loaded from the underside magazine, included a stripper clip guide on the top side that the M1 didn't. In the above image it looks like an extra sight folded down....however... not.

I didn't remember the stripper clip guide and never used it, we only had the 20 round mags in basic.
Never used an M-14 after basic until on burial detail in Hawaii, and then we only had blanks.

The only people I ever saw with an M14 in Vietnam were snipers. Wonder what happened to all the M14s? No third world country that we are in love with would want them as long as there are some AK's around. No way Civilian Marksmanship Program is going to be selling them. Democrats are afraid of rifles with magazines that shoot semi auto. However, they weren't afraid if you put in a 8 round clip like the M1. No such thing ....I imagine...as an aftermarket clip with more than 8 rounds. I know there is such a thing with fewer than 8 rounds...which somehow is not only ok but kosher.

Good point, I wondered what actually did happen to all the M-14s. So I looked it up.
