Music with roots in locations

Post by Niner » Wed Nov 03, 2021 11:00 pm

New Orleans is famous for a variety of jazz that draws on black marching bands of the long past. A New Orleans band always has a Tuba in it by tradition. Modern jazz, not Dixie land, has no tuba as a general rule of thumb. Tuba's, historically, are for bands that move around which is perfect for New Orleans. It's a little like airborne troops are expected to have parachutes even when no troops actually parachute into any conflict any more. Authentic New Orleans bands have Tubas.

Tuba Skinny is one of my favorites. They play in the French Quarter now and again and at various venues It's amazing how many street musicians there are operating for tips and notoriety there seem to be when I've visited.

In this video the gal with the cornet is the actual leader of the band.

Anybody got a favorite local band or one that is defined by where they are doing their thing?
