As much as Duncan and I like to pick on each other, he is absolutely correct about
the brass monkey.
And he is also probably correct about his balls being lead, not brass...............

I got the Brass Monkey story from a Tristan Jones book. Tristan was later proven to be a big yarn teller and made no distinction between fact and fiction if he saw a good story in it. And I got a feeling Duncan will eventually show us a photo of his balls ....... the lead kind.

I am reminded of a Goons Show sketch; two of them are on guard duty an the Tower.
They're walking their beat and suddenly "Clunk---clunk"
Says one "Look at the brass monkey!"
Towards the end of the show we are back with the two on sentry-go, further remarks about the cold, then "Clunk----clunk"
"Ooh! Look, now the ears have fallen off!".

Still to do;
Paint the wheels & axles.
Coat the barrel with Duracoat.
Make tampion.
Fit eyes to the carriage to take retaining ropes.
Fit retaining ropes.
Build deck to mount it on and shoot from.

Looking good. Just by way of contrast, I got a toy cannon. It just sits on a shelf and collects dust. It does nothing. If you look closely at the firing model and then at the toy you can see the "realness" of the one Duncan is making. However.... that gun carriage color I still find hard to believe is correct. Although it is much like that as Duncan has researched....

This model is supposed to be a Spanish gun of perhaps a hundred, or more, years before the Constitution's guns.

Well the model is finished except for the barrel which might be coated next week.
The plywood base is the one I am going to use for the deck, it is 40cm x 40cm.. I am now waiting for some blocks to arrive from Amazon but meantime I will concentrate on the deck area.

If you fire it, it will fly about 1o feet in recoil. Don't stand behind it!
How much does it weigh? Five pounds?

Looks really well done. Great looking cannon you have there. I'm looking forward to some photos when you fire it.
How about the 4th of July? Just right for a cannon model from the Constitution.
